Online application program makes sorting process easier Elm Leaves, Pioneer Press, October 2008
When it comes to hiring new teachers, Bob Johnson must be glad this isn't the good old days. With more than 2,200 applicants for 22 available teaching positions for the 2008-09 school year, the "good old days" would have meant having to read through paper copies of resumes and letters from those seeking jobs.
Thankfully, said Johnson, assistant superintendent of Leyden High School District 212, the district began using an online job application process about five years ago. This is the first year for which Elmwood Park Community Unit School District 401 is using the same system -- AppliTrack.
The AppliTrack system allows online completion of comprehensive job applications along with the ability for applicants to include attachments with resumes and teaching certificates. All of that information can be used by job seekers for multiple school districts using AppliTrack.
The system also allows personnel of school districts using AppliTrack to search applicants by specific qualifications, job skills and experience.
"It's a big help in dealing with the large volume of applications we get," Johnson said. "We can search and sort with it, and it really gives us the ability to drill right into the information."
Paula Hlavacek, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for District 401, agreed that AppliTrack is a huge help in hiring new teachers.
"It helps immensely," she said. "It probably gets us more applicants, and (the application is) very in-depth. We can search by experience or a variety of other things, and there's a link to (teaching) certificates on the State Board of Education Web site."
In Mannheim School District 83, an online application process is slated to be implemented soon, said Assistant Superintendent Tom Lindsay.
Franklin Park School District 84 does not use an online application process, but does receive some applicant information that way, said Superintendent David Nemec.
"We are a member district of the Illinois Education Job Bank, and we do receive online applicant information via the Internet from candidates through IEJB," Nemec said.
