NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB: The Elementary School Counselor promotes and enhances the learning process for students through an integration of academic, personal/social, and career development. Contributes to and/or manages the School Counseling Program using the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. Delivers counseling services through classroom guidance lessons, structured play at recess, small groups, and individual counseling. Analyzes data and uses results to inform stakeholders and continuously improve programs. Assists with transitions, particularly Pre K to K, K to 1st grade, and 5th to 6th grade.
The counselor acts as an advocate for the student, arranging for appropriate resources when necessary, and assisting students in understanding the school and its environment, understanding themselves and their relationships with others, and understanding their strengths and needs. Work with all students, grades K-5, on character development, positive behavior supports, and behavior modification. Provide consultation and support for mental health needs with students and families to ensure student success.
FUNCTIONS: Essential Job Functions: 1. Design and provide research-based interventions in behavior. 2. Support academic interventions, including organization and study skills. 3. Utilize progress monitoring tools to determine whether interventions are positively impacting student achievement. 4. Develop and provide support for peer relationships, coping strategies, effective social skills, and conflict resolution. 5. Implement Character and Anti-Bullying program at each grade level. 6. Identify at-risk students and provide support around goal setting and problem-solving. 7. Educate students on their understanding of themselves and others. 8. Serve on the building committees, e.g., Character, Student Resource Team and Safety Team. 9. Provide parent programs on topics of need. 10. Provide referrals to outside agencies and resources as needed. 11. Attend state and regional trainings when appropriate. 12. Maintain student records and ensure their confidentiality. 13. Other duties as needed or assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge, Skills, and Mental Ability:
Ability to communicate orally and in writing effectively with a wide range of staff, students, parents and the general public, both verbally and in writing.
Leader in the facilitation of mandated reporting and training
Must possess strong technology skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and sustain positive, effective work relationships with staff and the general public.
Collaborate with mental health professionals both at Frontier and at outside agencies
Flexibility to work effectively both independently and in teams.
Ability to be flexible in scheduling time to meet student, parent and teacher needs.
Demonstrates organizational skills.
Embraces and supports Core Knowledge curriculum and charter school concepts
Ability to understand and apply educational and instructional theories and practices for the instruction of students.
Strong ability to administer suicide and threat assessments
Ability to identify conflict and take the steps necessary to resolve the issues.
Education, Licenses, Certification or Formal Training:
Master’s degree in School Counseling
Current Colorado license
ASCA, CSCA or both certification
Experience in a school setting preferred.
Equipment and Materials Used:
Skills in word processing, database and spreadsheet programs and experience with data systems, is preferred.
Can easily and efficiently adopt new technology skills.
Physical and mental abilities sufficient to perform the essential functions and duties of the position.
Ability to work well under stress and strict time constraints.
