GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, assists in the development and supervision of special education programs for students with Individual Education Programs. Special Services provides support to all district schools in four focus areas of services to include Early Childhood, Academics, Behavior and Mental Health, and Post-Secondary Transitions. All supports are centered around the 17 indicators in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Makes budget recommendations to the Director of Special Services. Responsible for materials and supplies budget(s) as assigned. Supervises certified and classified staff members as assigned.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Lexington County School District One Board policies. Must be able to access reliable transportation.
Personal computer experience required. Strong knowledge of word processing, e-mail, spreadsheets, electronic file management, the internet, and reporting and presentation software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Under general supervision of the district Coordinator of Special Education- Academics, assists elementary special education and general education teachers in developing increased content knowledge and pedagogical strategies through ongoing and sustained professional learning experiences at the Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI) and Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) elementary schools in Lexington County School District One. Provides ongoing support in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment to build capacity within ATSI and TSI school special education programs. Fosters collegial relationships and engaging learning environments in order to work productively as both a facilitator and coach. Position Title: Special Education Teacher (Self-Contained)
Under general supervision facilitates the development of Individualized Educational Programs (IEP's) and instructs academic and/or living skills to students who have been identified as having disabilities under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). Assists in other school and district programs as assigned.
Supervises students in classrooms and other situations. Responsible for maintenance and inventory of equipment; responsible for reporting equipment malfunctions. Indirectly provides supervision to instructional assistants as assigned.
Conducts duties in a classroom or office environment with no significant exposure to environmental factors. May be exposed to noise from students, bodily fluids, and the possibility of injury from a violent or impaired student. Requires constant attention and repetition associated with working with disabled students. Physical demands are most often restricted to classroom work requiring occasional lifting/moving of items weighing up to twenty-five pounds; however, occasional positioning, moving and/or lifting students weighing up to two hundred pounds may be required. Occasional local travel is required; no overnight travel required. Job requires the operation of general office, technology and special education equipment.

Under general supervision of the athletic director, instructs students in a sport to obtain a high skill level, an appreciation of discipline and sportsmanship, and increased self-esteem.
Responsible for athletic equipment and facilities. Supervises students participating in sport being coached.
The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds such as boxes of materials. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as furniture or boxes of materials.
Conducts duties in both indoor and outdoor environments with potential exposure to heat, cold, and/or wetness. Requires ability to provide constant attention working with students. Physical demands are restricted to work requiring occasional lifting/moving of items weighing up to seventy-five pounds. Occasional local and overnight travel is required. Under general supervision of the transportation supervisor, operates a school bus in accordance with all state laws and regulations to transport students to and from school facilities. Is responsible for maintaining discipline of students being transported.
No budgetary responsibility. Supervises students riding the bus.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT/JOB REQUIREMENT:
Work is conducted primarily on a school bus where one is required to drive in varying weather conditions with exposure to elements such as heat, cold, rain, humidity, etc. May require driving on roads in poor condition. Involves duties which require constant attention and awareness. Physical demands are related to the operation of a school bus, operation of a handbrake and other controls, and maintain cleanliness of equipment. Routine local travel is required to transport students to and from school; no overnight travel is required.
