PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To help reduce or eliminate speech impediments that interferes with the individual student's ability to derive full benefit from the District's educational program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
- Master's Degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university
- Valid Texas license as a speech-language pathologist granted by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and/or the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SBESLPA)
- Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA CCC), preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to use the accepted tests and measurements to assess speech impairments
- Knowledge of speech evaluation and therapy procedures
- Strong consultation skills with an emphasis on effective communication (verbal and written), organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Bilingual Skills preferred
Experience:
- Experience in public school speech therapy preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
ASSESSMENT (Not applicable for Licensed Assistants)
- Conducts evaluations to assess students with speech or language impairments to determine eligibility. (Licensed Assistants can administer routine tests).
- Develops strategies or procedures and diagnostic statements by interpreting observations or data.
- Assists in conducting evaluations for assistive technology.
- Participates in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist in interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students with speech impairments or conditions.
THERAPY
- Plans and provides appropriate individual and group therapy to students consistent with speech and language goals contained in the Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Evaluates student progress and determines readiness for termination of therapy services.
- Maintains appropriate documentation concerning lesson plans and logs.
CONSULTATION
- Counsels and involves parents in the remedial process.
- Collaborates with classroom teachers to plan and implement classroom activities to improve speech and language skills of students.
- Participates in the student's multidisciplinary committee in order to plan for his/her appropriate educational program.
- Provides professional development in assigned schools to help school personnel identify and understand speech impairments in students.
- Communicates effectively with colleagues, students, and parents regarding the accomplishment of therapy goals and needs of the student.
STUDENT MANAGEMENT
- Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.
- Establishes sound behavior management that is conducive to the instruction provided in the therapy sessions.
PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
- May supervise licensed speech-language pathology assistant(s).
- Assists in the selection of equipment and instructional materials.
PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT
- Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records and other required documents.
- Complies with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education and board policy.
- Complies with all district and campus routines and regulations.
- Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills related to job assignments.
- Maintains accumulation of CEU's in order to keep license current.
- Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

MENTAL DEMANDS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.
Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
