CARES Classroom Assistant
Purpose Statement
The job of a CARES Classroom Assistant was established for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of students with autism; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior; documenting activities and progress; and supporting students' IEP goals.
Functions
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials as assigned by supervising instructional staff for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
- Attends staff meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying informaiton relative to job functions.
- Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
- Creates a variety of documents and materials (e.g.games, schedules, visual supports etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and promoting student growth and development.
- Implements under direction of supervising instructonal staff, instructional plans and behavioral plans designed by IEP team for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
- Maintain the necessary records, data,collection, and charting in accordance with the indentified behavior plan.
- Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school and community environments including both 1 on 1 and embeddd in class routines for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Actively collaborates with teachers, psychologists, therapists, administrators and parents to review, revise and develop the required strategies needed for students to make progress on IEP goals and objectives.
Essential Functions
- Collects ongoing daly data on IEP objectives for the purpose of reviewing with the students' team in order to ensure IEP requirements are being met.
Qualifications
- Knowledge and understanding of individuals with autism.
An individual is deemed Highly Qualified by ONE of the following ways:
1. An associate degree (or higher) from an accredited institution of higher education; or at least two years of study at an accredited institution of higher education (defined as 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours). Applicants must submit their official transcripts from an accredited college or university. Please review the Instructions for Submitting Transcript and short video tutorial before scanning and uploading transcripts.
2. An online assessment for paraprofessionals prescribed by the State Board of Education (ParaPro Assessment). Candidates must request their test scores be reported directly to the Ohio Department of Education from the Educational Testing Service. Upon successful passage of the test you will then be able to ADD the ESEA designation to your ODE license.
If you are in need of taking the ParaPro Assessment you will take the test in Mentor at the Mentor Schools Board of Education building AFTER being hired as a full time employee. A two hour block of time will be scheduled for you to come to the board office and take the online test.
The ESEA designation is a one time cost of $20.00 that will need to be added to your ODE Educational Aide permit. This is a condition of employment.
