Position Description

• Support teachers and teacher teams to provide access to the core curriculum for a diverse array of learners, including but not limited to Multilingual Learners and Students with Disabilities.
• Support teachers and teacher teams with looking at student data/work to identify student needs in order to adjust instructional practices and to develop targeted supports for students.
• Apply knowledge of adult learning principles to inform targeted supports for teachers and teacher teams through coaching, modeling, facilitating inter-visitations, etc.
• Build strong relationships with teachers and paraprofessionals.
• Attend regular professional learning workshops with the district team.
• Collaborate with the Reading/Writing Improvement Teacher to ensure that Tier I, II, and III interventions are aligned and designed for maximum impact.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

JOB SUMMARY
 
The K-12 school counselor provides academic, career, college access, affordability, and admission, and social-emotional competencies to every student annually by helping design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive evidence-based school counseling program in each district school. The school counselor provides an annual plan and advising to every student, classroom school counseling lessons in collaboration with other educators for all students, group and individual counseling for some students. The school counselor also provides additional school-wide activities that promote student success, helping to close achievement, opportunity, and attainment gaps, increase student career/college success, and improve mental health/well-being. The school counselor is an advocate, leader, and change agent partnering with colleagues inside the schools, in the community, and with family members for optimal student success. The Director of School Counseling supervises the school counselor in consultation with the building Principal. 
 
Services to Students
• Plans, delivers, and evaluates school counseling interventions to help close achievement, opportunity, and attainment gaps. 
• Delivers academic success skills, including organization, time management, and study skills, to all students annually. 
• Delivers career development skills, including assessments, career clusters, use of the Occupational Outlook Handbook (embedded in Naviance), creating resumes/cover letters, and job shadowing/searching techniques. 
• Delivers college access/affordability/admission skills to all students with attention to first-generation students, students with disabilities, and students needing affordability resources. 
• Provides social-emotional skills to all students, including anti-violence/ anti-bullying, stress management, cultural diversity, and strategies to improve energy/ mood. Ensures every student has an annually updated ACCESS & Accomplishments Plan. 
• Ensures ethical practice by using a decision-making model and sharing the most recent updates of the ACA, ASCA & NACAC codes of ethics with all stakeholders. 
• Coordinates orientation for new and transfer students and families. 
• Applies developmental, learning, counseling, and education theories.  
• Uses Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success standards (ASCA) in the school counseling program. 
• Demonstrates an understanding of the impact of cultural, social and environmental influences on student success and opportunities. 
• Designs and implements instruction aligned to Mindsets and Behaviors in Classroom, Group, and Individual Settings.

• Participates in PPT/504 meetings, team meetings, and restorative justice settings. 
• Makes referrals to appropriate school resources. 
• Consults with educators for student achievement and success. 
 
Liaison and Collaboration with Outside Resources 
• Maintains professional memberships in state and national school and college counseling organizations (ASCA/CSCA, ACA, NACAC/NEACAC). 
• Collaborates with family members and community agencies/businesses in a school/family/community partnership for student achievement/success. 
• Makes referrals to appropriate community resources. 
 
Planning and School Counseling Program Development/Evaluation 
• Demonstrates leadership as a system change agent for equity by developing and implementing a comprehensive school counseling program. 
• Establishes and maintains School Counseling Program Advisory Council. 
• Assists in annual Equity Audit of school programs/policies/practices. 
• Assesses the School Counseling Program annually and shares results with all stakeholders using ASCA Program Assessment and the ACCESS Questionnaire.  
• Uses disaggregated data to plan School Counseling Program interventions. 
• Uses technology effectively in the school counseling program. 
• Annually updates school counselor/administrator agreement.

• Knowledge of evidence-based research and best practices in designing, implementing, and evaluating a school counseling program and interventions including school counseling curriculum lessons, group and individual counseling, and planning/advising for all students. 
• Demonstrated professional identity/memberships in state and national school and college counseling professional organizations. 
 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Effective skills in working with all school stakeholders and community partners. 
• Ability to identify students with disabilities and refer for appropriate services and accommodations. 
• Ability to affirm and work effectively with students and other stakeholders of multiple cultural and linguistic identities.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under the direct supervision of a classroom teacher, the paraeducator supports students to participate in their educational program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

ALL PARAEDUCATORS:
• Assist in the implementation of the Norwalk Board of Education and administrative policies, rules, regulations and directives
• Follow Norwalk school policy to ensure student safety
• Follow teacher’s oral or written directions with accuracy
• Assist the teacher with the implementation of classroom instructional goals and Section 504 plans
• Assist students with classwork individually or in small groups
• Assist the teacher in maintaining student records of attendance
• Assist the teacher with documentation of student progress
• Assist the teacher with the preparation and distribution of lesson plan materials
• Encourage students to interact appropriately with peers
• Assist students during recess, breaks, emergency drills, assemblies, on school buses and field trips
• Assist and support students to use computers, iPads or other media to access curriculum
• Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
 
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
• Effective, active listening skills
• Ability to record data with accuracy
• Ability to work effectively with others
• Ability to implement teacher directives related to instructional and behavioral goals effectively

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Interact in a positive manner with staff, students, parents, and visitors
• Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and conversation
• Maintain a level of approachability by administration, staff, parents, and visitors
• Respond to questions and requests in a timely and appropriate manner
• Attend meetings and professional development activities as recommended by teacher, supervisor or Principal
• Perform other related duties as assigned by teacher, Principal, Special Education or Supervisor
 
QUALIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATES:
• High school diploma or equivalency and ParaPro Certificate
• Bachelor’s Degree, preferred
• Associate’s degree in education or related field, or ParaPro Certificate, or two (2) years of college
• Two (2) years of experience working with children or young adults in a school setting, preferred
• Fluency in Spanish preferred
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Norwalk Board of Education may find appropriate
 
Days:                     Monday – Friday (37.5 - hours weekly/schedule determined by Principal)
Salary:                   In accordance with the collective bargaining agreement

PARA-INTERVENTIONIST
SILVERMINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
 
POSITION SUMMARY
Paraeducator-Interventionists work closely with the Academic Intervention Team (i.e. Coaches and/or Improvement teachers, Site Director, Building Leaders.) and are directly supervised by the Building Administration team. Implement academic intervention strategies and programs and any other newly introduced curriculum, or instructional program. The former positions of tutor and interventionist have been incorporated into this position.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Assist in the implementation of the Norwalk Board of Education administrative policies, rules, regulations and directives
• Follow Norwalk school policy to ensure student safety
• Follow teacher’s oral or written directions with accuracy
• Support students with class work
• Support the teacher with documentation of student progress
• Support the teacher with the preparation and distribution of lesson plan materials
• Encourage students to interact appropriately with peers
• Assist students during recess, breaks, emergency drills, assemblies, on school buses and field trips
• Implement remediation plans for students at risk from Academic Intervention Team and/or Building Leadership
• Provide supplemental academic intervention to small groups of students who are identified, by Academic Intervention Team, as at risk for experiencing academic difficulties
• Implement and deliver academic intervention strategies and programs with fidelity and integrity
• Participate and support in the administration of all student academic assessments
• Participate in Academic Intervention Team meetings to review assessment data and make decisions about instruction and intervention
• Assist and support students to use all necessary and useful equipment for effective implementation of instruction
• Meet regularly with the Academic Intervention Team
• Attend all professional development meetings as designed and necessary as initiated by the District
• Support the teacher with creating instructional plans for academic intervention groups based on student needs
• Maintain attendance, all academic outcome data and all other academic data that provide evidence of student growth.
• Participate in parent teacher conferences, when necessary, to communicate evidence of student progress to families
• Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
 
Other Duties and Responsibilities:

Qualifications/Certificates:
• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in an education related field
• Experience working in schools, preferably with implementing academic interventions and/or supporting students experiencing learning difficulties
• May require fluency in Spanish, Haitian-Creole, and French
 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively, orally and in writing

• Ability to perform tasks effectively
• Ability to interpret student assessment data and develop appropriate intervention plans in consultation with teachers, coaches, directors, and administrators

Additional Working Conditions:
