    This position requires a valid Texas School Counselor certificate.  Incumbent must have at least two (2) years of successful classroom teaching experience.  Incumbent must be able to read, write, and converse fluently in English.
    This position requires knowledge of counseling techniques, strategies, and the developmental stages of children (e.g., social, cognitive, moral, and emotional). Incumbent shall participate in planning, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive developmental guidance program to serve all students and to address the special needs of students. This position also requires the knowledge of State, local, Federal, and school policies and procedures regarding such matters as grade promotion, graduation, and behavior.
    Incumbent assists students in making informed choices regarding educational, vocational, career,
    and personal decisions. Work is performed with a variety of guidelines, regulations, and laws requiring interpretation. Judgment is required to protect rights of students and maintain confidentiality. Judgment, diplomacy, and quick thinking are necessary to help the range of students served by incumbent. The range of student needs is significant, and the incumbent must handle many students and multiple needs simultaneously. Incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the implementation of the school counseling program aligns to the district strategic plan.

    • Provide district- approved developmental school counseling curriculum in a systematic way that helps students develop their full potential including the student’s interests and career objectives.
    • Attend and support academic planning.  Secondary counselors are expected to collaborate with parents on academic planning including course selection and student schedules. As needed implement an individual planning system to guide students as they plan, monitor, and manage their own educational, career, personal, and social development.
    • Coordinate comprehensive transition activities from grade to grade and level to level.
    • Conduct and utilize a needs assessment to guide campus-wide curriculum and small group instruction.
    • Based on needs assessment, incumbent will provide support to students through individual or small group counseling.
    • Maintain professional development by such activities as attending conferences or workshops and belonging to professional organizations.
    • Participate in AISD required campus-based support teams.
    • Incumbent must have knowledge, understanding, and be able to apply state, local, federal, and school policies including bullying, harassment, and child protective services reporting requirements.
    • Utilize active listening skills and ensure quality communication and dialogue with all stakeholders.

    • Have knowledge of current mental health issues, assess student needs following Austin ISD policy and protocol, and make appropriate referrals, as needed.
    • Ability to maintain, organize, and document student records for assigned caseload.
    • Adheres to legal, ethical, and professional standards.
    • Establishes and maintains professional relationships with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, parents, and community members.
    • Provide responsive services to intervene on behalf of any student whose immediate personal concerns or problems put the student’s continued educational, career, personal, or social development at risk.
    • Provide system support to support the efforts of teachers, staff, parents, and other members of the community in promoting the educational, career, personal, and social development of students.

    Perform other related duties as assigned; however, all employees are expected to comply with lawful directives in rare situations driven by need where a team effort is required.
    Services are performed in a standard office or classroom environment.  Computer use is required, and prolonged use may result in repetitive hand motion.  It is expected that occasional field trips, district wide, and state-wide travel may be made.  Incumbent should be willing to contribute directly or indirectly to the development of children both inside and outside school, which may include working hours in addition to the regular school day.  This position may involve rare exposure to blood or body fluids.  Regular attendance is required for this position.  On rare occasions, the incumbent may be at a slight risk of personal harm when counseling a violent student.
    This position reports directly to and is supervised by the Principal or administrative designee.  Supervisor periodically reviews final work. The incumbent works collaboratively and independently with multiple stakeholder groups including students, parents, school staff, school/district based decision making teams, and a variety of community representatives (e.g., college representatives, employers, social services agencies, testing companies) to help students identify opportunities and solve problems. More detailed instruction may be given in unusual cases or as directed by laws and regulations.
