    SUPERVISES:          Regular and Substitute Bus Drivers, Bus Monitors, Bus Mechanic
    JOB SUMMARY:     Develop and maintain a safe and efficient transportation system that allows students the option to take full advantage of education opportunities offered through curricular and extra-curricular activities. Supervise the comprehensive operation of school buses, fleet maintenance and pupil transportation, including supervision of all employees, fiscal integrity and interpersonal relationships.
    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:        Terms and conditions as established by the Board of Education
    • CDL Type B License with all applicable endorsements
    • Must pass DOT physical and obtain medical certificate
    • Satisfactory driving record and criminal background check
    • Pre-employment drug screen
    • Knowledge of Iowa/Federal laws and regulations pertaining to transportation in a public education setting
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills
    • Personal computer experience
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • Strong decision making skills
    • Flexibility in work schedule – may require On-call availability on school days
    • Strong supervisory and human relations skills
    • Develop routes and schedules to ensure students are efficiently routed.  The basic routing will be completed during the summer as soon as drivers are known with special education routes established as needed.  Routes will be driven twice a year with the driver to view any hazards and to compile students and times for each route.
    • Assign drivers for activity trips and educational field trips.
    • Responsible for bus inspections, bus evacuation drills, and driver training program for all drivers as well as working with the mechanic on preventative maintenance.
    • Recruit, train and supervise transportation personnel and make recommendations related to employment, transfer, promotion and termination.
    • Train new drivers and ensure all drivers complete the annual required classes to meet state requirements.
    • Responsible for physicals, CDL’s and updating corresponding records on the DOE website.
    • Evaluate all staff on a yearly basis.
    • Work cooperatively with the building administrator in cases of proposed suspension of student riding privileges.
    • Ensure bus evacuations drills are accomplished regularly and that students are education in proper bus riding procedures.
    • Drive bus or vans as often as needed in times of shortage.
    • Approve expenditure of department funds.
    • Work collaboratively with the superintendent in the development of procedures and recommendations for school delays and or closures during emergencies and/or inclement weather.
    • Establish and maintain internal and external communication processes for the achievement of customer satisfaction. Respond to customer inquiries, determine action required and implement appropriate action.
    • Perform other duties as assigned

The employee must be capable of doing this with assistance. The employee must be capable of transporting students via wheelchair. The employee must be able to kneel and squat for minutes at a time, crouch and bend forward multiple times, as well as reach above the head and forward up to 24 inches and on occasion up to 36 inches. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp items. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must occasionally lift/carry up to 55 lbs. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.
