    Buena Vista University’s Music Department invites entrepreneurial, enthusiastic, and dynamic applicants for the position of Director of Athletic Bands. This position is a full time, non-tenure track position to begin August 2018.
    This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative person to reimagine what was once a popular BVU Marching Band and Pep Band tradition.  The Director of Athletic Bands will be tasked to create, coordinate, instruct, and develop a fully functional collegiate marching band and pep band program.  This position will serve as the principal recruiter for prospective band members wishing to participate in an intercollegiate athletic band experience.  This individual must have a record of establishing and maintaining positive relationships with secondary school music educators.

     A few notable facts about BVU are:
    • BVU’s endowment has grown to more than $140 million.
    • 861 full-time students were enrolled on the Storm Lake campus for the fall semester last year.
    • 1,373 students are enrolled at BVU sites located on community college campuses or online, which has graduated more than 15,000 students since it started over 40 years ago.
    • BVU has 16 convenient site locations across Iowa for place bound students who desire to earn a bachelor’s degree.
    • 106 students are enrolled in graduate programs.
    • The average student-faculty ratio is 9:1. The average class range is 10-19 students.
    • There are 78 full time faculty and 23 part-time faculty teaching across five academic schools.

    • The George Wythe Award is Buena Vista University's highest honor for excellence in teaching. The award was endowed in 1988 through a gift from the late Drs. Paul and Vivian (Class of 1959) McCorkle, who were both Life Trustees of BVU. It is named for George Wythe, the educator who taught such famous fathers of the American Revolution as Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, James Monroe and Henry Clay. The George Wythe Award includes a $30,000 cash award and a sabbatical for the recipient to pursue professional development and/or research.
    • One hundred percent of full-time Storm Lake campus students who applied for financial assistance last year received it.
    • Each year, BVU provides approximately $14 million in student financial assistance out of its operating budget.
    • Based on a response rate of nearly 100 percent, 96 percent of the Class of 2017 was employed, in graduate school or otherwise satisfied with their career status within six months of graduation.

    Director of Athletic Bands will be responsible for supporting the strategic vision of the Athletic Band program.
    • Responsible to develop and support the strategic vision of the Athletic Band program.
    • Administering, directing, rehearsing, and leading an Athletic Marching Band and Pep Band.
    • Direct band activities such as maintaining equipment and uniforms, acquiring music, and the planning and scheduling of rehearsals and performances.
    • Enhance the visibility of Buena Vista University and its music program by identifying and actively participating in a broad range of campus and community events.
    • Prepare recruitment materials for communications with high school students, parents, school administrators and other interested parties.
    • Maintain a roster size consistent with enrollment goals of the institution.
    • Work closely with University Advancement to fundraise for the Athletic Band program.
    • Remain abreast of contemporary trends in marching band and be a creative drill designer.
    • Responsible to develop, direct, train and lead a college level drum line.
    • Maintain and develop an active profile at the local, state, and regional levels.
    • Arrange and act as liaison for out-of-town travel, arranging for transportation, coordinating performance needs and equipment availability.
    • Perform other duties as requested, delegated or assigned.
    • The successful candidate will have a consistent record of excellence as a band director, ensemble program manager, and student recruiter.
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators throughout the university.
    Education and/or Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree in music education required, advanced degree in music and/or education preferred.
    • At least 3 years of experience in marching band directing
