    Substitute School Nurse - Job Description




    Scope:                                                                   To provide a thriving school environment that focuses on the health and well- being of the whole child. 




    Reports to:                                                          Superintendent of Schools/Building Principals


    Educational Requirements:                         RN: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing


                                                                                    Passed state boards and hold current Iowa license




    Performance responsibilities:

    • Maintain strict confidentiality of student and staff information according to HIPPA and FERPA guidelines and regulations.  Serve as a mandatory reporter and advocate for children in crisis
    • Collect, review and maintain all immunization records to comply with state mandated requirements prior to school admission
    • Collect, review and maintain Annual Health History updates for every student prior to the first day of school each year.   Prepare a confidential health concerns list for staff with appropriate information obtained from yearly updates.  Prepare confidential list of students with documented food allergies to the Food and Nutrition Department
    • Collect, review and maintain student health file on all students enrolled in the district.  Store and maintain transfer/inactive student records according to state guidelines
    • Maintain organized, clean and appropriately supplied health office, including ongoing inventory of equipment and supplies. Adhere to prescribed budget allowances.  Perform monthly maintenance checks of AED equipment
    • Provide basic first aid and acute care as needed to students and staff.   Maintain appropriate documentation of care provided
    • Access, report and adhere to all Department of Health guidelines with regard to communicable disease outbreaks within the district.  Report daily to PCHD all student and staff absence data
    • Dispense medication and keep records according to the BFCSD board policy and the five rights of medication delivery.  Maintain safe, secure location for storage and transportation of all medications
    • Use of appropriate means of communication to relay health information as needed to parents/guardians and staff members
    • Maintain appropriate records of all accidents/incidents on school grounds/activities that involve student or staff
    • Collect and maintain employee records as directed by administration.  Emergency contact information, Blood borne Pathogens, Chemical Right to Know and Lock Out/Tag Out certifications
    • Work with AEA audiologist in screening for adequate hearing abilities for Grades PK – 4 and any student with known deficits in Grades 5 – 12
    • Train and supervise staff (including clerical staff) in administration of medication as appropriate for field trips, emergencies, etc
    • Collect, maintain and provide current list of annual athletic physicals to all coaches.   Maintain list of medically ineligible students for physical education department and coaching staff
    • Prepare and maintain current Health Care Plans and Emergency Plans on any student with chronic health conditions
    • Member of IEP and 504 planning teams as medically necessary
    • Research, maintain and perform all aspects of monthly Medicaid billing process for all eligible and qualified students in the district
    • Maintain proper certification to perform all staff/bus driver drug and alcohol screening for the district
    • Obtain and maintain appropriate CPR instructor's certification in order to comply with state mandated Healthy Kids Act – that all graduating seniors will have been instructed in the proper technique of CPR.  Organize and maintain records of student compliance with Healthy Kids Act
    • Classroom presentations including but not limited to:  Hand washing, dental hygiene, puberty, reproductive hygiene, CPR and various other health related topics at individual staff requests
    • Member of District Wellness Committee
    • Member of Staff/Student Crisis Team
    • Kindergarten Roundup:   presentation to parents, collection and maintenance of immunization card, lead and dental screening requirements, physicals, health, height, weight and vision screenings. Coordination with AEA for hearing screenings
    • Active cooperation and compliance with audits as required by State of Iowa i.e. immunization audits, dental screening audits, lead screening audits, and Medicaid claiming audits
    • Attendance at Heartland professional meetings and trainings.   Attendance at other workshops as appropriate and approved by administration
    • Resource person for health related topics for students, parents and staff members.  Referrals as appropriate to outside agencies or resources
    • Create and maintain appropriate and accurate Substitute Nurse Handbook for use during any absences
    • Submission of end of year Health Services report to School Board

    Salary and Benefits:                                        As per negotiated agreement.  Classified Personnel Category 2


    Evaluation:                                                         Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of Classified Personnel.
