The Treynor Community School District serves a rural area of 100 square miles with a growing student body of over 800, K-12. Open enrollment accounts for about 30% of the student body. A staff of over 100 provides services to the students. The community itself is 18 miles from the larger Omaha metro area that provides opportunities for cultural events, employment opportunities and other amenities.
Students of the Treynor Community School District have learning opportunities that enable them to demonstrate the competencies and habits of mind needed for future success. These competencies and habits include both 21st Century skills and academic content concepts. Students have various opportunities to learn and grow through both academic course options, fine arts programs, clubs and extracurricular programs. The high school offers 7 college classes through Iowa Western Community College on-site and 35 courses online. Treynor students who took the ACT had a composite score of 22.1 and traditionally 90% of all students score proficient on the Iowa Assessments in reading, math and science. Based on the Iowa Report Card, the elementary school is rated as high-performing, middle school acceptable and high school high performing.
The district is fortunate in having very fine facilities, both from the standpoint of equipment and buildings. The elementary building has had several additions. The Jr./Sr. High School building was completed in 1984 with a new addition completed in 2000. Two gymnasiums, with seating for 800 and 1200, and an auditorium are included in the facilities. A high priority is given to providing instructional materials and equipment. All classrooms are air-conditioned and connected to the Internet via wired and wireless technology.
In 2004, an addition to the elementary was completed, which included new offices, seven classrooms, a library, a computer lab, and a new gymnasium. Updates were made to the existing building. In 2008, a high school addition was finished, making it possible to implement a middle school for the 2009-2010 school year. The addition provided for a computer lab, kitchen and administrative offices.
This fall the community supported by 80.9% voting yes in the bond election, and passed a $11,500,000 initiative that will provide the school with the following: (a) addition and renovations to the existing middle/high school building to include a fine arts complex, including an auditorium, vocal and band music areas, art room, and additional high school classrooms; (b) repurposing the present auditorium and fine arts areas to provide locker rooms, storage, and a wrestling area; (c) renovating the weight room, training, and wrestling areas; (d) constructing a new transportation building with new drop off and pick-up areas; and (e) providing equipment, security/safety, HVAC and technology upgrades, including expanding fire sprinkler system and air conditioning in the West Gym.
