    Purpose of Position

    An ESL Associate translates documents and interprets conversations from English to a student’s first language (such as Bosnian, Spanish, Krahn or Arabic) and from a student’s first language to English. Additional responsibilities include assistant the ESL teachers with working with ESL families, instructional groups, clerical, supervision and other supportive duties.

    Base Hourly Rate- $15.80
    This is a full-time position and is eligible for health insurance benefits.

    1. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
      1. Translate materials to and from English.
      2. Interpret conversations to and from English.
      3. Knowledge of different cultures and ability to share that knowledge with students and staff.
      4. Knowledge of community agencies.
      5. Interest and ability to work effectively with students who are learning English.
      6. Ability to work effectively with parents, students and staff.
      7. Ability to become knowledgeable regarding classroom and building procedures and to apply that knowledge.
      8. Ability to follow directions and to work without close supervision.
      9. Ability to maintain accurate student records as directed.
      10. Good oral and written communication skills.
      11. Ability to assist students with academic tasks.
      12. Understanding of English language development.
    2. Education
      1. High school diploma or equivalency required.
      2. Post high school training in related subjects desired.
      3. Para educator certificate desired.
    3. Experience
      1. Experience with translating and interpreting.
      2. Successful experience working with groups of children preferred.
    4. Equipment
      1. Office equipment such as cell phone, pager, multi-line phone system, fax machines, copiers, and computers.


    The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.
    1. Translate written materials to and from English.
    2. Interpret conversations to and from English.
    3. Act as a liaison between the school district and English Language Learner families.
    4. Assist with daily classroom routines and supervision of students.
    5. Assist with individual students or groups as instructed.
    6. Maintain confidentiality.
    7. Use technology, as needed.
    8. Assist in maintaining an orderly classroom.
    9. Administer individual tests from general education as well as for language skill development.
    10. Ability to collaborate with ESL and general education teachers, as needed.
    11. Ability to assist student with academic tasks.
    12. Perform other duties as assigned.
