Purpose of Position Provides one-on-one or small group assistance to special needs students allowing them to attend a regular classroom setting on a regular basis. Base Pay Rate- $14.09 per hour 4 days x 7 hours, off Wed QUALIFICATIONS (Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, Education, Certification/Licensure, Experience, Equipment) A. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities 1. Ability to work with physically impaired and special needs students on a daily basis. 2. Able to react quickly and calmly when an emergency arises. 3. Knowledge of IEP procedures, physical therapy and/or occupational therapy programs. 4. Knowledge and use of assistive devices such as wheelchairs and walkers. 5. Ability to communicate with extreme patience to students with special needs or behavioral problems. 6. Work with individuals towards IEP goals. 7. Ability to explain and participate in daily activities. 8. Must be able to interact in a positive manner with students, faculty, parents and other staff members. B. Education 1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. Required. C. Experience 1. Some experience with special needs children helpful, but not required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. 1. Accompany special needs students to classes, lunch and on extensive community based outside trips to work on daily living, career and leisure skills. 2. Provide instructional assistance to students in subjects when needed. 3. Provide assistance in classes such as PE, Home Arts and Computers. 4. Administer physical and/or occupational therapy programs, where appropriate, when trained by classroom and/or area education agency therapists (this may also include lifting students when transferring or doing range-of-motion exercises). 5. Assist student with achievement of IEP goals for physical achievement. 6. Assist students with self-care needs when appropriate. 7. Attend district seminars and classes. 8. Maintain a reliable attendance record. 9. Perform other duties as needed or assigned by classroom teacher, building administrator and/or Coordinator of Special Education. One of the following must be met: (1) 48 credit hours post-secondary education (2) associate’s degree or higher (3) paraeducator certification from Board of Educational Examiners (4) combined score of 150 or higher on the COMPASS test or meet the requirements for the ACCUPlacer exam
Terms of Employment: all student scheduled days Salary: $15.12/hr certified with Iowa teaching license or para-educator license
